The Children’s Hospital at Fitzsimons
THE CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL AT FITZSIMONS (2007) Aurora, CO
Media: Epoxy terrazzo with metal embeds
Dimensions: 19,000 sf
Commissioning Agency: Regional Arts and Culture Council, Portland, Oregon
This project was completed between Fall 2004 and Summer 2007. Braaksma designed a bright 19,000 square foot terrazzo floor that creates a maze of color and imagery to remind children of a place away from doctors and nurses. Oversized images with whimsical details of spots, spirals and stars that people can stand on and follow from one figure to the next provide a welcome diversion for the kids and adults. Some of the featured imagery includes a butterfly with a 28-foot wingspan, a maze, and an engraved Spanish healing poem.
