DRIFTING
BEYOND CONTROL
San Diego International Airport
San Diego, California, 2001
Working with images that
were derived from the marine biology of southern California,
Carolyn Braaksma, in collaboration with Barb McKee, designed
intricate and unique prototype molds for pre-cast concrete
exterior wall panels at the San Diego International Airport.
Four different 9.5-ft by 9.5-ft patterns repeat in varying
combinations along walls beneath the sterile international
concourse. Their imagery includes enlarged microorganisms,
algae, kelp, and indigenous marsh plants.
