THE
GREEN
Charlotte, North Carolina, 2003
The Green in downtown Charlotte
is a 1.5-acre privately maintained park with public access.
To emphasize the client’s focus on literacy, the
artists transformed the park’s paving into a giant
game board. Children’s riddles, an oversized hopscotch,
and various alphabet games were sandblasted into patterns
of brick, stone, and concrete. The park centerpiece is
a 24’ diameter fountain plaza featuring three GFRC
(glass fiber reinforced concrete) spouting fish that measure
9.5’ in height. Encircling the fountain plaza are
wave benches that start close to the ground and ramp up
to normal seat height. The floor of the plaza contains
aquatic quotes by James Joyce and Adam Lindsay Gordon.
The paving design was a collaboration with Barb McKee.
